Skandináv mitológia

This graphic experiment (the work of Búi Kristjánsson, 1990) aims to depict the rounded world of Scandinavian mythology. The earth is encircled by the sea, and not far from the shores lurks the World Serpent monster, biting its own tail. The structure of the space is dictated by the World Tree (Yggdrasil): the gods live in Ásgarð in the upper part of its foliage that covers the land, and at its foot lies Miðgarð, the human-inhabited Middle-earth. The bridge of the gods, Bifröst, the rainbow, curves between the two. An eagle sits above the deer grazing the leaves. The three roots of the tree branch into Midgarð, Oriashon and Hel, the underworld. The dragon snake Níðhögg burrows the lowest. The words of the tussle between the eagle and the snake are conveyed by the squirrel running along the tree trunk, Drilltooth. At the foot of the World Tree, there are three wonderful springs, those of the fate-determining Norns, the wise Mimir and the Hvergelmir, which feeds the 11 rivers. You can also see the three ominously crowing roosters with the gods, with the giants living beyond the mountains and in the underworld. The earth-disk itself is held by four dwarves named after the sky. Horse-drawn chariots carrying the Sun and the Moon march across the sky.
